A flat roof is, as the name suggests, a straight roof at almost the same level. This type of roof is common in garages, home/patio extensions, and commercial buildings. If your home or commercial building happens to have a unique flat roof, you must know that it requires more maintenance and repair than the other types of roofs.

Sloped roofs depend on gravity for the removal of water. Flat roofs, on the other hand, need drains. They have a waterproof membrane for protecting the property underneath. The word ‘flat’ is slightly misleading because the roof isn’t entirely flat. If it were, you would have to live under a small pond on your roof every time it rained.

Every flat roof has a gradual slope. This gradual slope is about ¼ inch for every foot and allows water to flow downwards to the drains that further route it to the ground.

Unlike sloped roofs, flat roofs don’t have any angles. This increases the chances of troubles with moisture and water. Therefore, it is vital to focus on the proper installation of a flat roof. A poorly installed flat roof with no adequate drainage tends to accumulate liquids. This liquid damages the roofing system and your home’s structure in the long run.

Creative Roofing Solutions Specialist understands the installation, repair, upkeep, and inspection needed to ensure that everything on the flat roof is functioning as it should. Whether you have a damaged roof, a leaking roof, or need to replace your existing flat roof, we can help you complete the same at the most affordable price.

We identify the source of the problem and let you know if you simply require a few minor repairs or you need to get the roof replaced. When you consider flat roofing, here are some essential things to know:

  • Requires proper installation
  • Works well in warmer climates
  • Demands routine maintenance to avoid water leaks, blistering, and cracking
  • Is recognized as a low-slope roof

Types of Flat Roof

  • Polyurethane Roof: Our team of specialists sprays polyurethane foam onto the roof directly. This foam settles and converts into its solid form. In the next step, a protective coating is applied. A polyurethane roof is highly flexible, making it the perfect choice for roofs with unusual angles and shapes. Foam offers many benefits when compared with other types of flat roofing systems. The most essential benefit is its ability to protect against heat and reduce your energy utility bills.
  • Built-up Roofs: Also known as hot tar roofing, this roofing system is an old and proven method. There are three or four layers of asphalt felts that we overlap and fuse using hot asphalt. To protect it against weather, sunlight, or individuals walking on it, we apply a reflective coating or a surface material such as gravel or a smooth coat of hot asphalt.
  • Modified Bitumen: Similar to built-up roofing, this type of roofing uses reinforced asphalt felts. Rubber or plastic polymers are added to the asphalt in the felts. This addition improves durability, elasticity, and performance on the whole. With the added polymers, there is a need to apply only one layer with overlapping seams. When attaching to the roof, we use hot asphalt or an adhesive. Propane torches are also great to melt the underside of asphalt and make application easy. Sometimes, modified bitumen needs protective surfacing materials, for which we use a liquid coating or mineral granules.
  • Single Ply: Made using plastic, rubber, or a mix of both, a single layer of single-ply membranes is applied to install your single-ply roof. The installation is comparatively simple. We roll out the membrane, glue the seams together, or chemically weld or heat weld the seams joining the sheets. Then, we attach it to the roof with the help of ballast, adhesives, or fasteners.
